“Vranas Olive Press Museum” extra virgin olive oil
The Gaea - “Vranas Olive Press Museum” extra virgin olive oil is produced on Lesvos Island, located in the Northeast Aegean Sea and is a result of an effort to create something beyond the ordinary, something unique.
This is where Gaea’s devotion to excellence meets the ancient roots of olive trees and revived a unique quality extra virgin olive oil.
This oil comes from the “Agrielia” (wild olives) olives variety, particular and unique to this corner of Greece, well known for the great quality olive oil it produces.
The olive trees are exposed to the sun for more than 3.000 hours/ year, allowing olives to acquire a distinctive and warm aroma and taste. The olives are picked one by one by hand and are immediately placed into airy containers.
The fruit is immediately transferred to the olive mill and is crushed under strict supervision of the caring producer. Temperature is constantly monitored so that it does not to exceed 19ºC, ensuring that all the rich aromas and flavours are preserved from the olive to the oil!
Gaea – “Vranas Olive Press Museum” has a bright green color and an intense fruitiness due to its very low acidity level – circa 0.2%.
It has a harmonious and elegant taste, delicate in the tones of ripely fruity and a balanced bitter and pungent content, closing with a tomato leaf and greenly fruity aftertaste.
The Gaea - “Vranas Olive Press Museum” promotes a unique cultural history, the roots of which are deeply connected to the island, as it features the “Vranas Olive Press Museum”, a stunning industrial building and its early 20th century machinery that was established by the grandfather of Nobel Prize winning poet Odysseas Elytis.
Located in the traditional village of Papados, at the centre of an ancient olive grove, the Vranas olive press was the first steam powered press in the Aegean with machinery from the factory of Essigonis (Essigonis’ grandson designed the mini cooper).
Built in 1887, the factory was shut down after 60 years of continues production, until it’s rebirth through the restoration completed in 2005. Now, this historical monument stands a strong reminder of the history of both Lesvos and Greek Olive oil.
For Gaea, the revival of this industrial monument symbolizes a return to the ancient wisdom and proven health values of the traditional Greek diet. Proceeds from the sales of this olive oil support the Museum, ensuring the proper maintenance of Lesvo’s industrial history.
